So you need a 4x4, or AWD, some ground clearance, and space for people and kids, but you budget limits you to about 10,000 dollars. What do you buy?
The first, and least off road ready contender is a 2008 Saab 97x. The Saab has the lowest mileage of the group of 90k miles.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The second choice, has the only V8, and thus highest tow rating, however it also has the highest mileage at 150,000 miles.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Last the only option with a third pedal, and the funkiest styling.

And something for those who bleed red, white, and blue.

Early FX35/45 without hesitation. I still want one.

I like Toyota, so my choice would be the 4runner. Toyota makes the best cars and trucks.
There’s also the Matrix AWD :)

I know where you can find a nice Allroad

Because it’s like one of those old body-on-frame station wagons, only on stilts and with 4 wheel drive.
And those seats are ridiculously comfy.
![]() 03/10/2016 at 13:14 |

it’d bet it’s got 170,000+ miles

As a diehard Jeeper- this person is right. A good used 4Runner is the best for this set of requirements.

Third gen Toyota Rav4 V6 with low (less than 50,000) miles.
I would NEVER spend 10K on something with over 100,000 miles. Even if if the vehicle is still good it sure as hell not 10K good.
When you can buy a 10,000 mile 2014 midsize sedan for 12K it just seems ludicrous to spend 10k on an 10 year old 100,000+ mile SUV.
Obviously practical thinking has taken over at my age. 10 years ago I would’ve bought a 200,000 mile hummer H2

A bit high but you could probably talk them down to $10k.

Can confirm. Sitting in one of those seats right now.

If Behind the Burner has taught me anything its that I should buy a 4Runner.

I have some experience in this field. Got a 2006 Saab 97x with 67,000 miles for 8,000 and a 2005 Ford Expedition with 97,000 miles for 10,000.
The Saab is an absolute piece of shit. The seats have no support, power is nonexistent, gas mileage is abysmal at 16mpg, suspension is super bouncy, and the air compressor is the most annoying thing on earth.
The Expedition on the other hand has performed better than expected and the only problem we’ve had is a bad coil pack. It is a total bomber. We regularly go driving on the beach and have only gotten stuck once.
I have ridden in the 4tunner a few times, it is pretty comfortable, but a little short on head room.

Trailblazer EXT 4x4.
http://semo.craigslist.org/cto/5475179480…
They run 5-8k, are 4x4, AWD, or 2wd, use super commonly available parts, and are pretty stout except for the (relatively) cheap transmission.
Pick up one for 5k, get a built trans installed, new struts/shocks+springs, brake job with performance brake parts, and decent grippy tires. total of around 8-9k spent, depending on how much work you do yourself.
You have a 7 passenger SUV with a 275HP engine, fresh suspension, and a SERIOUS towing capacity for its size (5-7k, depending on gearing and outfitting. Yes, the same as or MORE than the Tahoe, depending on options.) it is also capable of decent fuel economy, and parts/service are cheap (it’s just a GM!)

for some reason when I saw that I thought it was a reply to my comment about the Allroad. I dunno how that happened

2005 Touareg V8
I’ve always been a fan of the first gen Touaregs. This one has 73,154 on the clock and comes in at a whopping $6 under budget. Unfortunately it is an 11 year old Volkswagen, so you’ll need to save all of your remaining $6 to put towards inevitable repairs. That being said, it’s an SUV that’s not ubiquitous like the majority of the other options in this price range.

AND it's a Quadrasteer!

I second this, but I’d pick a GMT400 Tahoe - less rear overhang.

Used 4th Gen 4Runner. Body on frame, 4x4, seats 5 adults, tows well, V6 or V8. Not the only choice, but a solid choice.
![]() 03/10/2016 at 15:11 |

That picture you have is of the 4th gen, which they never made with a V6. This is the 3rd gen, with the full size spare on the rear.

Damn straight. Quadrasteer was the most amazing thing ever, that ‘burban can park like a Smart Car.

Sorry that is definitely the one I meant I just grabbed the wrong picture.

Dude, don’t, just don’t. I had a 2004 Touareg with the V6 - traded it the day warranty expired. I was at the dealership all the time. They would never give me a good rental - just enterprise voucher, so I drove shitty cheap compacts all the time.

That’s too bad that the Saab sucks. Not surprising tho. I’ve driven Trail Blazers, and Envoys and i wasn’t trilled with either.
![]() 03/10/2016 at 22:46 |

I checked the link, but I missed where the mileage was listed. It really is crazy that it’s that cheap with such competitively low mileage.

ground clearance. Not at all necessary for most drivers, but vital to some.
![]() 03/10/2016 at 22:51 |

That is a killer price for a Land Cruiser that doesn’t have 180,000 miles.
![]() 03/10/2016 at 22:57 |

The two things you suggested are like polar opposites.
![]() 03/10/2016 at 23:14 |

What’s the price (other than your sanity and financial solvency due to repairs)?

Yeah, I was also looking at a Tahoe last week that was listed for 7k and only had 102k miles. 4x4, no accidents it was a 2002.
